The last battle of the Civil War happened in Minnesota 11 years after the south surrendered. During the war, William Quantrill raised a band of guerrilla fighters to attack Union sympathizers in Kansas and recruited a couple of promising young Missourians, Frank and Jesse James.

 

On a hot summer evening, we’re all looking to cool down. Make that happen at any one of these local spots with some cool plates. Because these dishes are served mostly uncooked, the ingredients must be of the highest quality. Think heirloom tomatoes, high-quality seafood and artisan cheeses.

The sixth-graders thought of it themselves. The class had been studying world history through the lens of current events such as the global water crisis. After the catastrophic 2010 earthquake in Haiti, they wanted to help.

 

Poblano Pepper

The Poblano is a large, green, heart-shaped pepper with an amazing smoky flavor. It rates fairly low on the heat index even at its hottest. The Poblano is most commonly roasted and used in Chile Rellenos.

Help area school-age children prepare for the upcoming year with a backpack of new school supplies. The Western Communities Action Network’s (WeCAN) annual Ready to Learn distribution is August 24–25, and the group needs your help.

 

Ninety years and $2.5 million later, Wayzata Community Church’s (WCC) annual rummage sale is back and bigger than ever. The sale began in 1921 with a few women from the Ladies’ Aid Society and has since grown into a community-wide event.

 

Get sweaty on your way to service. Minnetonka United Methodist Church invites the community to bike, walk, run or carpool to the August 7 service for the fourth annual Blessing of the Bicycles.

 

Now that retirement is at the top of former WCCO anchor Don Shelby’s to-do list, he and wife Barbara are opting for new digs near the lake.
